SEA Plastics is an organization led by engineering students, to contribute to research on micro-plastics and to raise awareness about plastic pollution.
Creating a link between science and raising awareness to fight plastic pollution in the Mediterranean Sea.
→ Contributing to current scientific knowledge
→ Assisting the establishment of environmental policies
→ Helping consumers to better understand the impact of everyday habits
→ Decreasing single-use plastic production by changing consumption patterns
→ 4 months of sailing to sample micro-plastics
→ Several thousand miles in 3 different countries : Spain, Italy and France
THE HISTORY OF THE ASSOCIATION
The association was created in 2017 by three engineering students from AgroParisTech. They wanted to make use of their gap year by working on a scientific project related to the oceans. Therefore, they interviewed researchers to ask about current global issues, which lacked coherent data. They ended up working on the distribution of micro-plastics in the water column. Since then, every year, a new team takes the lead to make the association grow. Today, an important objective of raising awareness has been added in the guidelines of the association.
THE FUTURE OF THE ASSOCIATION
A team for 2021 has already been created. Changing the team every year allows the new team to be full of energy and with new ideas. However, teams from previous expeditions are always there to advise the new team and to help them in their project.
Also, the association is getting more and more international.
